Injured jockey turns to yoga to heal

Although yoga is considered a workout in and of itself, competitive athletes are still turning to the exercise for its relaxing, self-healing powers, Adelaide Now reports.

It may be that few understand these benefits better than jockey Jason Benbow, whose ankle was smashed during a race when his horse fell in October 2010. In order to recover from his injury and embrace inner peace in order to return to the sport, he turned to yoga to strengthen his mind, balance and fitness.

"It's been good for my flexibility and movement, and has helped deal with the scar tissue following the surgeries," Benbow told the news source. "I highly recommend. It's great for the body and it's great for the mind."

He added that he had felt hopeless and frustrated after the accident, which resulted from a hole in the track that brought his horse down.

Incorporating yoga into his lifestyle enabled Benbow to slowly recover, achieve strength of mind and get back into the saddle. Since the accident, the jockey has returned to racing,

Yoga helps busy moms relax

For individuals with too much stress and responsibility, life can sometimes feel like a stuffy, windowless room. For these tired, overworked people, Dahn Yoga exercises may be the answer to achieving inner peace, calming the mind and reaffirming their important place in the universe.

Busy mom Judie Hurtado found that relaxation techniques were the best way to cope with her hectic life, according to Livingston Patch. Cold, dark winter days, sick children and an injured husband convinced her to pursue yoga as a way to relieve stress.

She found a class nearby and was not surprised to see that most of the other attendees were also overtaxed wives and mothers. The teacher, who had three children herself, began by teaching the class soothing relaxation techniques to soft music.

"No matter where you are, it is perfect," the instructor said, quoted by the news source. "You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Let go of any expectations or worries."

According to Hurtado, these words and the calm, quiet meditation that they accompanied were exactly what she needed.

Dahn Yoga exercises emphasize the importance of the mind-body connection. By reestablishing this vital link, practitioners can reach their full potential as healthy, happy Earth citizens.
