Champion Dahn Yoga Hosts Texas’ First Student Leadership Camp in December, 2011

In December of 2011, Champion Dahn Yoga Center hosted the Student Leadership Camp, the first of its kind in Texas.  Students came from all over the Houston area to participate in this great opportunity to learn, share, and grow together.  Instructors Nora and Ginny guided the children through a wonderful 2-day Kids Camp experience.

“The program offered 31 children a special opportunity for TX students to develop their character, focus and leadership skills.  Over the course of 2 days, students participated in advanced Brain Education training, including physical exercise, social/emotional regulation activities and cognitive exercises designed to improve confidence, focus, memory and imagination with an emphasis on leadership skills.  This transformative camp provides a nurturing, challenging atmosphere which empowers participants to overcome their limitations and develop their truest potential. ” – Nora, Program Trainer

Family Member/Dahn Yoga Practitioner, Cheryl, shares: ”I was so happy to have my grandchild attend the Power Brain Student Leadership camp at Champion Dahn Yoga in December of 2011.  I enjoyed watching the children’s joy at the camp, as they overcame many issues.  Also, through the experience of seeing how the children improved their creativity through simple games and exerises, I wondered, what kind of person I would be today if I had had the opportunity to attend a similar program when I was younger?  After participating with family in this program, I feel confident that if I had had such a wonderful opportunity, perhaps I would not have carried the as much of the baggage that I carried into adulthood.  It was wonderful to see these children grow brighter, stronger, and more confident!  Thank you Champion Dahn Yoga for helping our children, who are the future!”

Parent and Dahn Yoga Practicioner, Pablo, compliments the goals of the program: ”The most precious gift we can give to those we love the most is the opportunity of following their dreams, trusting themselves, and loving themselves.  At the end, that is what life is all about.  The Student Leadership Camp provides that opportunity.   Their success in life is going to be your success too.”

Mary Jensen, one of the camp’s Staff Members/Dahn Yoga Instructor, says, “The children’s camp affirmed my desire to teach Brain Education, to children and to families.  The energy, trust and hope that filled our Center was such FUN!  I can not imagine a greater honor than a parent entrusting their precious child to us to learn.  I was humbled and grateful for the opportunity.”
The first Student Leadership Camp in Texas was a great joy and success for all who participated, and so many parents and children shared about how much the camp helped to develop valuable life and leadership skills.  The children’s artwork (below) filled the halls of the Champion Dahn Yoga center with inspiring creativity.

Yoga during pregnancy may be good for mother and child alike

Staying fit, active and healthy is not always easy, and that goes double during pregnancy. Maintaining good physical well-being can be difficult when the exercises one can engage in become more limited, but a team of perinatologists recently announced that low-impact activities like stretching, breathing exercises and yoga can keep both mother and child healthy.

Researchers at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences found that expectant mothers who did moderate exercise for half an hour three times a week tended to have children with lower heart rates.

Not only were the fetuses of fit mothers in better cardiovascular health before birth, but up to a month after being born these babies maintained a lower heart rate, indicating that moderate physical activity has lasting natal effects.

Mothers-to-be who are at a loss for what to do to stay in good physical condition may find that Dahn Yoga offers them a place to stay healthy and happy. Besides keeping one's energy channels open, this holistic mind-body regimen can teach practitioners to calm their minds and to reconnect to their friends, family and the world around them.

Stand-up comedian describes yoga experience

Yoga classes can be a place to relax, decompress, recover, smile and even laugh. While numerous yoga enthusiasts recall reaping the benefits of the mind-body system's gentle smiling and occasional in-class laugh of joy, one stand-up comedian recently reported having a laughable but decidedly not Dahn Yoga-esque experience.

In an article in the Huffington Post, writer and funnyman Max Fox recounted a yoga class in which he simply could not find a way to relax.

Fox's account includes being overheated, embarrassingly inflexible, unfamiliar with posture nomenclature and one of the only men in the room.

Many comic depictions of yoga use these devices, since a long-standing stereotype of the regimen is that only the most devoted and limber women engage in communal meditation classes.

In Dahn Yoga, this idea of yoga could hardly be further from the truth. No experience is required to join the classes offered in the program's many community centers across the the country, nor is flexibility a prerequisite.

Likewise, Dahn Yoga promotes diversity and interpersonal connections, which is why men and women of all ages may be found practicing relaxation techniques and posing together in the program's large, accepting classes.

Bringing yoga along on one’s travels can provide stress relief

Whether it is for business or for pleasure, traveling can be a rejuvenating thing. However, such an abrupt change in one's routine schedule may induce stress. That's where yoga can come in and ensure well-being, relaxation and peace of mind.

According to Opposing Views, incorporating the practice into an altered schedule may be tricky, but it is doable. As always, wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothes is a must, whether travelers are hoping to meditate in their hotel rooms or outdoors.

Staying connected through mobile apps and DVDs could be a good way to reinforce exercises, particularly if one is new to the program. Bringing along a video or downloading an instructional clip could help practitioners perform the techniques accurately, thus ensuring the program's efficiency.

When performed correctly, the deep breathing and meditative postures of a regimen such as Dahn Yoga can bring about a great deal of stress relief and a sense of well-being.

Traveling does not necessarily have to mean a complete overhaul of one's normal schedule. Incorporating an hour or so of yoga each day can help practitioners feel great and stay healthy, even when they are far from home.

Stressed employees turn to the sanctuary of yoga

It's no secret that exercise can help relieve stress for even the most overworked employees. For example, hedge fund manager Jeremy Frommer recently turned to yoga to relieve the tension and anxiety of being on the trading floor all day, according to Hedge Fund Live. Tired of his hectic work environment – where colleagues shouted across desks and televisions blared in the background – Frommer engaged in the ancient art of meditation.

Not long after he began incorporating the practice into his busy work day, he raved about its myriad benefits on his physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The technique, which blended toning postures with deep breathing exercises, enhanced his mind-body connection, enabling him to pay closer attention to detail, increase his productivity and improve his mood.

No matter what one's occupation is, the serenity of yoga can offer welcome relief at the end of a long day. Exercises such as Dahn Yoga have proven to be effective at enhancing holistic health while enabling individuals to perceive life as more manageable.

Even taking just a few moments out of a busy day can help people better balance work, relationships and other responsibilities that may have decreased mindfulness and well-being over time.

Yoga may complement intense physical activity, like running

Running is a popular form of exercise that may just be the perfect complement to yoga, although the two are very different, according to FitSugar. Hitting the track or treadmill can be a great way to lose weight and stay fit, but such a routine may strain and overwork the muscles. As a result, runners may find the relaxation techniques and meditative postures of yoga to be both refreshing and rejuvenating.

Yoga may be a unique regimen in that it positively impacts an individual's mental, emotional and physical well-being all at once. This holistic approach has garnered the ancient art many followers here in the Western hemisphere. For routines such as Dahn Yoga, basic exercises include deep breathing, soothing poses and inner reflection, techniques that are suitable for almost anyone of any age.

In addition to calming the muscles, yoga promotes tranquility and mindfulness. People all over the world have experienced more contentment and a better sense of control as a result of adopting such a daily regimen. Additionally, the technique fits nicely into busy lifestyles that induce stress, eye strain and muscle fatigue.

Devoting even just an hour each day to meditation and relaxation techniques could help people achieve a feeling of well-being.

More Americans are adopting yoga

Over the years, yoga has become a popular standby in gyms and fitness centers across the U.S. What began as an ancient art is now a mainstream regimen that many busy, modern individuals have adopted to help them feel more centered and empowered in a hectic world.

The Deseret News reports that more than 15.8 million Americans practice yoga on a regular basis, and the number is continuing to grow.

"In the last couple of years, my class numbers have quadrupled," said instructor Jenny Liddiard, quoted by the news source. "There are so many exercise fads cropping up out there, but the really cool thing about yoga is that it's classic and it's been around a long time. It's on the rise, but I don't think it will become a fad."

The exercise has been incorporated by countless individuals hoping to reforge their mind-body connection and discover inner peace amidst the hubbub of a fast-paced world. Not only do meditative techniques and relaxation encourage better mindfulness and tranquility, but they can also improve flexibility and health.

Those who choose to practice meditative methods – such as Dahn Yoga exercises – may be well on their way to improving energy flow and relieving stress.

Meditation can reduce sensitivity to pain

Individuals who experience pain as a result of injury or illness need not suffer anymore. According to researchers from the Universite de Montreal, practicing meditation and relaxation – which are two focal points of the art of Dahn Yoga – may be an effective method of pain management for those who have arthritis, back pain or cancer.

Senior author Pierre Rainville said that meditators appear to have lower sensitivity to pain. In order to explore the reasoning behind this, the research team conducted MRI scans on 13 meditators and compared their results to those of 13 people who did not employ the mindfulness technique.

They discovered that the most experienced meditation practitioners had the lowest pain responses, in addition to decreased activity in areas of the brain that are responsible for sensing pain.

"The results suggest that meditators may have a training-related ability to disengage some higher-order brain processes, while still experiencing the stimulus," Rainville explained. "Such an ability could have widespread and profound implications for pain and emotion regulation, [as well as] cognitive control."

As a result, those who practice Dahn Yoga regularly could be strengthening pain management efforts to relieve the symptoms and discomfort of many conditions.

AAOS recommends starting slow for those who are new to yoga

As with any new exercise, starting slow is the key to success. This holds true for those who are beginning yoga classes, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

For those who are new to a regimen such as Dahn Yoga, consulting the doctor may be a good idea, particularly if there are medical problems or past injuries. And instead of jumping into just any yoga classes, getting recommendations from friends or seasoned practitioners can ensure that one trains under a qualified instructor. Learning the breathing exercises and meditative postures from an experienced teacher will optimize the program's benefits.

The AAOS recommends that new students drink plenty of fluids and wear comfortable clothing. Choosing the right apparel can keep one cool, while allowing one to focus on mastering the exercise at hand.

Listening to the body while attending yoga classes is also key. That is, after all, what yoga is about – promoting awareness of the body and its enchanting connection to the mind and spirit. Paying attention to any pain or discomfort might help new students take a step back and improve their technique before moving on to one that they have not yet grasped.
