Champion Dahn Yoga Hosts Texas’ First Student Leadership Camp in December, 2011

In December of 2011, Champion Dahn Yoga Center hosted the Student Leadership Camp, the first of its kind in Texas.  Students came from all over the Houston area to participate in this great opportunity to learn, share, and grow together.  Instructors Nora and Ginny guided the children through a wonderful 2-day Kids Camp experience.

“The program offered 31 children a special opportunity for TX students to develop their character, focus and leadership skills.  Over the course of 2 days, students participated in advanced Brain Education training, including physical exercise, social/emotional regulation activities and cognitive exercises designed to improve confidence, focus, memory and imagination with an emphasis on leadership skills.  This transformative camp provides a nurturing, challenging atmosphere which empowers participants to overcome their limitations and develop their truest potential. ” – Nora, Program Trainer

Family Member/Dahn Yoga Practitioner, Cheryl, shares: ”I was so happy to have my grandchild attend the Power Brain Student Leadership camp at Champion Dahn Yoga in December of 2011.  I enjoyed watching the children’s joy at the camp, as they overcame many issues.  Also, through the experience of seeing how the children improved their creativity through simple games and exerises, I wondered, what kind of person I would be today if I had had the opportunity to attend a similar program when I was younger?  After participating with family in this program, I feel confident that if I had had such a wonderful opportunity, perhaps I would not have carried the as much of the baggage that I carried into adulthood.  It was wonderful to see these children grow brighter, stronger, and more confident!  Thank you Champion Dahn Yoga for helping our children, who are the future!”

Parent and Dahn Yoga Practicioner, Pablo, compliments the goals of the program: ”The most precious gift we can give to those we love the most is the opportunity of following their dreams, trusting themselves, and loving themselves.  At the end, that is what life is all about.  The Student Leadership Camp provides that opportunity.   Their success in life is going to be your success too.”

Mary Jensen, one of the camp’s Staff Members/Dahn Yoga Instructor, says, “The children’s camp affirmed my desire to teach Brain Education, to children and to families.  The energy, trust and hope that filled our Center was such FUN!  I can not imagine a greater honor than a parent entrusting their precious child to us to learn.  I was humbled and grateful for the opportunity.”
The first Student Leadership Camp in Texas was a great joy and success for all who participated, and so many parents and children shared about how much the camp helped to develop valuable life and leadership skills.  The children’s artwork (below) filled the halls of the Champion Dahn Yoga center with inspiring creativity.

Even at age 5, kids can benefit from yoga classes

While it might be hard to believe that a child would sit still for weekly Dahn Yoga instruction, practitioners from many different regions of the U.S. have noted that kids seem to love the dual pursuit of balance and fun. A Dallas-based news channel recently reported that yoga classes may also benefit health in childhood.

KXAS-TV, an NBC affiliate, highlighted the classes offered at a local fitness studio. Unlike typical yoga activities, this instruction is intended just for kids, who told the news station that they love posing, stretching, meditating and breathing deeply.

Studio owner Jessi Kennedy told the source that her very first student, a nine-year-old girl with a club foot, no longer suffers from podiatric trouble. Kennedy also expressed surprise at kids' facility with yoga.

"It seems to come so natural to them and they respond to true yoga so much easier and quicker than the adults do," she said.

Because reconnecting the mind and body is important at any age, Dahn Yoga offers a number of classes for adults, children, the elderly and whole families.

Instructor who found solace through yoga introduces the exercise to teens

Many people think of yoga as an exercise that is unique to adults. In recent years, however, the meditative practice has grown more popular among children and teenagers.

For example, a Texas school district has begun offering classes to high school students to support their well-being and personal development, according to the Monitor, a McAllen, Texas, publication. Anna Chavarria, the instructor, said that the opportunity allows kids to experience benefits such as better health, stress relief and improved mindfulness.

"Our focus and objective is to have a hands-on activity for the students, for it not to look like a regular classroom," said Rose Solis, another instructor, quoted by the news source. "I've always loved physical things that are non-competitive."

Placing herself in the shoes of the students, she decided to help introduce yoga to young practitioners as an alternative to stressful, pressure-filled school sports. Solis began the exercise in earnest after the death of her mother, and she said that the calming technique allowed her to avoid depression and find inner peace.

This may be the reason why Dahn Yoga news tends to glow with praise. This form of meditation is being used to help teenagers across the country achieve mindfulness, tranquility and personal development.

Where you meditate matters

For practitioners of Dahn Yoga, meditation can bring relief from pain and stress, in addition to helping them view life as more manageable. Although comfortable clothing and a desire to meld body, brain and spirit are necessary, the setting may be just as important.

Practicing meditative postures with a clear head and a gentle smile may be most effective when one is in a soothing environment. Because the technique may be performed in any quiet area that promotes harmony and tranquility, practitioners have a wealth of options from which to choose.

Many individuals meditate at home, while others seek the guidance of a Dahn Yoga center. Additionally, practitioners who live in Texas may find this aura of tranquility at the Rothko Chapel, a sanctuary that promotes peace among all beings and displays calming works of art, according to NPR.

Additionally, nature can be a wonderful and inspiring setting in which to practice yoga. Techniques that involve deep breathing and relaxation may be even more effective when one is surrounded by the beauty of the sun, sky or water.

In yoga, meditation can bring a restful serenity and improve the mind-body balance of all practitioners, regardless of setting. For individuals who choose to engage in Dahn Yoga, meditation can be performed in any quiet setting that promotes harmony and peace.
