Do you have trouble sleeping? Have you tried what seems to be an endless supply of relaxation techniques before bed without success?

Tossing and turning can be frustrating, especially if you have to get up early in the morning. Inadequate rest can make you feel tired and lethargic all day, not to mention cranky. If you struggle to get some shut-eye every night, how about giving yoga a try?

"Yoga can supply a little meditation in an otherwise insane life of being connected to technology and disconnected from our bodies," said enthusiast Bree Davies, in a Westword blog post.

Many people who are looking for stress management activities often turn to this soothing regimen, which enhances multiple aspects of well-being. The gentle breathing exercises, calming poses and rejuvenating stretches can help calm your mind and prepare you for sleep.

Try this routine before you go to bed tonight.

1. Turn off all the lights in your bedroom. Make sure it is dark, quiet and cool before you begin, since these conditions can facilitate sleep.

2. Find a comfortable spot on the floor – preferably in a patch of moonlight, if possible – and sit down.

3. Close your eyes and breathe in deeply. Exhale slowly. Repeat, concentrating on the air moving in and out of your lungs. Feel your chest rise and fall with each breath.

4. Stretch your legs in front of you. Very slowly, with your eyes still closed, reach forward and touch your toes. Exhale as you do so, then inhale deeply.

5. Slowly move back to your starting position. Stretch your arms up overhead and hold for five seconds before slowly lowering them.

Repeat this process 10 times and then climb into bed. Sleep may come more easily after refreshing the lungs and stretching the tension from your muscles.
